Smart Street Lighting – Paving the Way for Smart Cities

Street lighting plays a critical role in a city’s safety, economy, and citizens’ experience. However, it constitutes up to 65% of a city’s electricity costs and 10% of its overall budget, making it a major expenditure.

Smart street lighting combines energy-efficient, long-life LED luminaires with wireless connectivity and optional sensors, allowing cities to remotely manage, monitor, and control lighting on roads, streets, parks, and plazas via a single dashboard. Luminaires can automatically switch on and off or dim, based on natural light levels. Motion sensor lights turn on automatically upon detecting a person or vehicle approaching, while emergency areas can override schedules to turn on lights. Smart street lighting typically covers large urban areas with a dense grid of line-powered luminaires that provide a reliable infrastructure for other IoT capabilities, such as smart waste bins, parking meters, and air quality sensors.

Smart lighting is quickly becoming the future of lighting and an essential component of smart and sustainable cities. According to the Northeast Group, smart street lighting investment is expected to reach $28.1 billion over the next decade, not including installation value.

Most integrated

Within a single die, the ALT1250 & ALT1350 chipset comes integrated with a best-in-class LTE-M and NB-IoT modem alongside a lowpower Cortex M4 MCU, dedicated for application execution. Network credentials are stored on the built-in integrated SIM (iSIM), eliminating the need for an external SIM size and cost, along with Sony GNSS to pinpoint the device location. A battery and antenna are all you need to launch your device.

5G massive IoT and multi-protocol network

ALT1350 integrates a 5G baseband processor as well as sub-GHz and 2.4GHz integrated transceiver to enable hybrid connectivity for smart cities. This enhances coverage, reduces costs and further decreases power consumption utilizing IEEE 802.15.4 based protocols such as Wi-Sun, LoRa and additional standard / proprietary point-to-point mesh technologies.

Highly secured communication

Security is crucial for smart city lighting. Smart city lighting systems, if compromised, can lead to serious security breaches, disrupting public safety and city infrastructure. Unauthorized access to these systems can result in tampering with luminaires, disabling lighting, or even causing false alarms. A compromised system could also affect other connected devices in a city's IoT ecosystem, such as surveillance cameras and traffic sensors, leading to widespread disruption. Sony’s Altair cellular IoT chipset provides highly secured architecture approved by tier 1 operators, with built-in security designed from the bottom up. In particular, the ALT1350 and ALT1250 LTE-M & NB-IoT cellular IoT chipsets offer highly secured communication, while OTA upgrades keep the device relevant and secure for years after installation.

Cellular Connectivity is Transforming Smart City Lighting

LTE-M & NB-IoT technology provides numerous benefits such as cost savings, energy efficiency, safety, scalability and connectivity. Smart lighting systems driven by IoT are incredibly energy-efficient, automatically adjusting light intensity based on time of day or presence of people. These systems are managed by global standardization and security alliances, ensuring the highest level of security available today. Municipalities can take advantage of the existing global cellular network infrastructure and easily scale from a single streetlight to millions.

IoT Requirements for smart street lighting

Smart city lighting systems provide meaningful insights regarding city-wide deployment and require specialized chipsets capable of controlling the lights, collecting data, and communicating with other devices in the system. Reliable connectivity is essential, ensuring seamless communication between different components, such as sensors, controllers, and cloud-based management software. Security is also a key concern, as smart street lighting systems are vulnerable to cyber threats. Finally, these systems should be easy to integrate with other hardware and software components, such as sensors, gateways, and management platforms, ensuring that they can be seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure
