Will Samsung be first to launch a truly smartwatch?

Six months ago, I wrote a piece on smartwatches.  In it, I argued that “Today’s devices are essentially sophisticated smartphone accessories…With the exception of some experimental devices…none of today’s smartwatches have stand-alone functionality.”

I ended by asserting that “Whether or not they make it to the market in 2014/15, smarter watches are definitely coming.  And, when fully-independent smartwatches are available, Dick Tracey will finally be left in the dust.”

According to this recent WSJ article, Samsung will be launching a truly smartwatch within a couple of months.
